“Mom, what did you do to Suzie?” I asked. She turned pale, but quickly denied doing anything wrong.

“Ben, I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she said, faking confusion.

I didn’t know what to believe. That night, I mentally went over every moment of Suzie’s pregnancy. He always seemed happy, or so I thought. But then I remembered the subtle and hurtful comments my mother made. Suzie always took them for a joke, but would it have hurt more than she looked?

Digging through Suzie’s belongings, I found the answer. Hidden in her precious jeweler was a letter from my mother. In it, I cruelly claimed that Suzie had cheated on me with pregnancy and that my daughters and I would be better off without her.

Tears were running down my face as guilt consumed me. How was I missed it? How had I allowed my mother to treat Suzie like that? I confronted her immediately, demanding that she leave my house. He tried to defend himself, but I refused to listen to her.
