Mercy looked triumphant.
Then Nicholas continued.
Something hadn’t added up. Ariel had said he never spoke during the rescue, but he clearly remembered begging his rescuer to save his grandmother’s ring.
He held up the velvet box.
The crowd erupted in whispers.
Then Nicholas called Bailey Monroe forward.
For one terrifying second, Bailey froze.
Then she stepped out from behind the pillar where she had been standing.
Cameras swung toward her. Reporters shouted questions. Ariel’s face went white.
Bailey walked to the stage.
Nicholas showed the evidence: the ring, the traffic footage, the 911 call, the paramedic description mentioning Bailey’s crescent moon birthmark.
There was no doubt left.
Bailey was the woman who had saved Nicholas Phil.
Ariel stood frozen, tears streaming down her face. Mercy looked stunned, then furious.
When reporters asked Bailey why she hadn’t come forward sooner, she answered simply: because she hadn’t saved him for money or attention. She had only stepped forward because she refused to let someone else profit from her courage.
Then came the question about Ariel.
Bailey looked at her cousin for a long moment. She thought about the child who used to draw them as sisters beneath rainbows, the girl who once slipped her chocolate bars and apologies when Mercy was cruel.
“I think people make bad decisions when they’re desperate,” Bailey said. “I’m not excusing what she did. But I’m also not going to stand here and tear her apart in front of cameras. She knows what she did. She’ll have to live with that.”
It was more grace than Ariel deserved.
After the press conference, lawyers, reporters, and executives descended into chaos. Nicholas guided Bailey away to a private floor in the building, gave her water, and sat with her while the adrenaline wore off.
Then he asked her out.
Bailey, honest as ever, asked whether he liked her or just the story of her. She refused to let herself become some fantasy in a billionaire’s mind.
Nicholas answered with the truth: he didn’t know everything about her yet, but he wanted to. Not because she saved his life, but because she was real, funny, brave, and unlike anyone he had ever known.
Bailey agreed to one date.
Before that could happen, however, Aunt Mercy and Ariel demanded to see her.
Bailey met them in a conference room alone.
