I picked up the spoon and took a bite. It was warm, rich, and full of life. I looked at my wife, then at my daughter, and finally at the empty horizon over the Gulf.
The “Responsible Son” was dead. The “Emperor” had abdicated. I was just a man, sitting at a table with the people I loved, eating a meal that hadn’t cost a single soul their dignity.
