He tried to explain. Said Vanessa left him. Said things didn’t work out. Said he made mistakes.
But it didn’t matter anymore.
“You didn’t lose me because of your mother,” I told him. “You lost me because you chose silence when I needed you to speak.”
He had no answer.
Before leaving, he asked, “Can I at least see her?”
I paused for a moment.
Then I said, “Maybe one day. When she’s old enough to decide for herself.”
And with that… I walked away.
Again.
But this time, not broken.
Free.
Years passed.
