The Prom Dress That Silenced the Room

“I just need to make it to your prom,” he told her one night at the kitchen table. “Then your graduation. I want to see you walk out that door dressed like the queen of the world.”

Nicole always answered the same way.

“You’ll see much more than that, Dad.”

The Idea That Came from Love

After the funeral, Nicole moved in with her Aunt Hilda. The guest room smelled like cedar and fabric softener—nothing like the small home she had shared with her father.

Meanwhile, prom season arrived quickly. At school, girls excitedly compared expensive dresses and designer brands that cost more than Johnny’s monthly salary.

Nicole felt completely disconnected from it all.

Prom had always been something she imagined sharing with her father. He would stand by the door, take too many photos, and tell her she looked beautiful.

Johnny had always joked that his closet contained nothing but work shirts.

“A man who knows what he needs doesn’t need much else,” he would say.

Nicole sat there for a long time holding one of them.

Then suddenly, the idea came to her.

If her father couldn’t attend prom with her… she could bring him with her.
