Her reaction seemed to unsettle him more than she could have imagined. The once warm atmosphere became tense. Without further discussion, he called the server, paid the bill in full, and stood to leave. Before walking out, he paused and said only one sentence: “I’ll see you around.”

Moments later, the server returned with a folded note he had left behind. Trembling slightly, she opened it and read something she had never expected. He confessed that he had carried a ring in his pocket, intending to propose that evening. However, he wrote, he felt the need to “test” her first, to see if she would act as he envisioned a partner should. According to him, her hesitation about splitting the bill indicated she might not be willing to be an equal partner, and because of that, he declared their relationship over.
