They laughed when my son walked across the stage at his graduation ceremony with a newborn in his arms – one woman whispered: “Just like his mother…”

“I saw a woman who sacrificed herself to the point of exhaustion and was still always there for me. I saw someone who chose me every day, even in difficult times. Especially in difficult times.”

My vision became blurred.

“I found out a few months ago that I was going to be a father,” he said. “And yes, I was terrified. I still am. But one thing I knew for sure…”

His voice trembled for a moment.

“I will not let him down.”

A complete silence descended upon the room.

“Some of you laughed,” he said, not angrily, but simply sincerely. “Perhaps you think this baby means I’ve already failed before I’ve even begun.”

He carefully adjusted the blanket around her.

“But it is not my failure.”

“It is my responsibility.”

“And she will never wonder if her father stayed behind.”

Someone in the audience started to cry.

Adrian looked directly into my eyes.

“My mother was seventeen when she had me. People saw it as a mistake.”

He swallowed.

“I witnessed a miracle.”

My heart sank.

“If I can be even half as good a father as she is… then my daughter will be fine.”

For a moment… silence.

Then someone stood up.

And then another one.

And another one.
