Erika Kirk Gets Emotional As Donald Trump Honors Charlie Kirk During His State of the Union Address

For a brief moment during the State of the Union, the focus shifted away from the podium. Cameras turned instead to Erika Kirk, the widow of the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, and the images instantly began circulating.

What lasted only seconds inside the chamber soon gained a much larger audience online.

The Tribute That Brought the Chamber to Its Feet

At the event, President Donald Trump acknowledged Erika’s late husband, Charlie, during his address, referring to him as a “great friend.” The recognition prompted applause inside the chamber.

As the crowd rose in a standing ovation, Erika stood as well, appearing visibly emotional. Photos show her reacting as applause continued around her.

One close-up frame shows her holding a tissue after she returned to her seat. The small detail quickly became a point of discussion online. On Facebook, commenters focused specifically on what she was holding.

One person said, “She has the famous tissue.” Another wrote, “Not the famous tissue!!!!! And the award goes to …..” Someone else chimed in, “Does she have the tissue on a chain around her neck!? She always has one handy!”

Months earlier, she had offered rare insight into how she saw the relationship between the two men.

How She Once Described Charlie and Donald’s Connection

During a November 2025 stop on the “Megyn Kelly Live” tour, Erika reflected on the bond between her late husband and Donald. She said:

“Charlie and President Trump had a really special relationship. It was one that some people would understand, others wouldn’t.”

She characterized their relationship as dynamic and multifaceted, saying it shifted at times between a father-son dynamic and one built on mutual respect.

According to her, both men shared a similar mindset when it came to building — Donald in the business world and Charlie through his work expanding Turning Point USA.

Erika also recalled her husband’s loyalty during politically turbulent moments: “He admired so much the president’s tenacity to keep going, especially after January 6, when no one wanted anything to do with him. And Charlie said, ‘I got your back.’ And he meant it.”

She said those moments showed what she believes is the human side of politics. According to her, public criticism and political attacks can overshadow the personal relationships behind the scenes, but in the end, people are simply doing their best with the one life they have.

She also said Donald treated Charlie with respect and never looked down on him. In her view, he appreciated Charlie’s ability to mobilize young people and share a message about the country’s strengths, while acknowledging its flaws.

She described their relationship as mutually supportive, saying they consistently stood by one another during difficult times. Erika added that their friendship left a lasting impression on her:

“And the president has always had a very soft spot in my heart because I got to witness that he wasn’t just the president to my husband. He was a friend, and I’ll never forget that.”
