He never asked her to choose him.
He simply stayed present.
He drove her to the hospital when labor came.
He helped build the nursery.

He held the door open and let her walk through it herself.
One night on New Year’s Eve, standing beside her as fireworks lit the city, he finally said what had been true all along.
