Slowly, they followed her inside. She guided them to a booth near the window and hurried to the kitchen. Moments later, she placed four steaming plates of food in front of them. “Eat as much as you like,” she said, her voice tender. “No one should go hungry.”
The oldest girl looked up at her, eyes wide with disbelief. “Why are you helping us?”
Emily paused, her heart swelling. “Because everyone deserves kindness. And because tonight, you’re my girls.”
That single act of kindness would unknowingly shape the next twelve years of her life.
From that night onward, Emily quietly made it her mission to care for the girls. After long shifts at the diner, she saved part of her tips to buy them food. She found secondhand clothes, helped with school supplies, and even taught them to read and write at her kitchen table.
