She hesitated. Proud. Independent. The kind of woman who had probably spent her whole life doing things alone.

But eventually, she stepped aside.

And I took over.

The work was harder than it looked. The heat pressed down, my body ached, my breath shortened. I was exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with the lawn.

But I kept going anyway.

Because helping her felt easier than thinking about my own life falling apart.

When it was done, I sat down, dizzy and drained. She handed me a glass of lemonade without a word.
