Mahelia said she was unclear about what problems her son and his wife — who married in 2024 and have four children together — had been facing. She also explained that she had reconnected with him more than a decade earlier after he had been raised by a family friend, Betty Walker, during a period when she was struggling with addiction as a teenager.
Betty said she was not present during the shootings but later learned that Shamar shot his wife multiple times in the head and stomach. She recalled seeing him just the weekend before at a family dinner, noting that nothing about his behavior seemed out of the ordinary.

“I was getting up this morning to make myself some coffee, and I got the call,” Betty said. “My babies — my babies are gone.”
