Before the tragedy, Shamar appeared to many as someone living a relatively stable life. He worked at UPS and previously served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from August 2013 to August 2020 as a signal support systems specialist and a fire support specialist, according to a New York Post report.

But behind that routine, there were signs of strain. A coworker described him as a devoted dad who often seemed overwhelmed, adding that he would pull his hair out — leaving a noticeable bald spot, the publication reported.
