Elijah previously made headlines in June 2025 when he was rushed to the hospital from his home following an overdose. Authorities were reportedly called due to erratic behavior, and drugs were allegedly discovered inside the residence.
That frightening episode came roughly two months after his wife, Marieangela King, filed for divorce after 13 years of marriage.

Her divorce filing followed a bombshell accusation made the year prior, when she claimed Cher had orchestrated Elijah’s alleged kidnapping from a New York City hotel room. The “Strong Enough” singer has denied those allegations.
Family tensions had already played out publicly in court.
In December 2023, Cher filed for a conservatorship over her son, seeking legal control over his personal and financial affairs. She cited his alleged substance abuse and mental health issues as the basis for her petition.

According to the BBC, Cher argued that Elijah was “substantially unable to manage his financial resources.” At that time, he was set to receive assets before the end of 2023 from a trust established by his late father, Gregg, which entitled him to regular payments.
In court filings, Cher’s lawyers stated she feared any distributed funds would be “immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah’s life at risk.” The filings also emphasized that Cher had “worked tirelessly to get Elijah into treatment and get him the help he needs.”
